Braintree BMX Club
Report from the British Championships 2007
The grand finale of the regional BMX racing series culminated in the British Championships this weekend at the beautiful and sunny Burnham on Sea in Somerset. Thirty three riders from Braintree travelled down the country to take part in this prestigious event, which was filmed by Sky TV to be televised on 6th/7th September
The day kicked off with cruiser racing and Tom Elvin rode fantastically well in his 13 – 15 cruiser class, finishing second overall at the end of the day and winning a trophy he could hardly hold up it was so big. The cruiser 16 - 29 saw Lee East and Jamie Clarke fighting for a place in the semi final but both just missing out.
The six and under class saw Braintree’s only BRITISH CHAMPION in the shape of Josh Peters who was completely unbeaten in every single race and went on to win his final easily. His trophy appeared larger than he was and he certainly had trouble keeping it up in the air. Tom Stokes rode in the same race but went into a run-off to secure a place in final and just missed out.
The female 7 – 9 class saw Kelsey Dixon riding her first ever Brits and going through to the semi-final easily where she finished in a frustrating fifth and lost out on a final.
The expert 8 class saw Shane Redgewell and George Schwedt-Moret riding good motos, going easily into the semi-final and then finishing fourth and gaining their places in the A final.. An unfortunate fall in the final mean’t that George finished eighth and Shane seventh. Further down the pack was Joshua Legrove who missed out on the semi-final despite good racing in the motos.
The expert 9 class saw Lee Golder, Shane Pavitt and Jonathan Boreham all riding at this level for the first time. Lee went through to the semi-final easily but Shane ended up in a run-off for a place in the semi. This he won with ease and so they both went in to their semi but unfortunately finished sixth missing out on the final. In the next group up Max Waghorn rode his motos well but missed out on the semi-final.
The expert 11 class saw a brilliant ride by Taylor Andrews who made the main with some impressive moto results and followed by a good semi result,a bit of a squeeze on the 1st straight saw him come home in 7th but a well deserved placing after last years 5th in the semi, also in the 11's Tom Hall was riding well in his motos ending in a run off for a place in the semi-final however he just missed out by a very close finish.
The female 10 – 12 group saw Paige Elvin riding at this level for the first time and doing well but missing out on a final. The male 12 saw Connah Wilson racing well and gaining a place in the semi-final where he finished seventh and missed out on the final.
The expert 13 class saw stunning racing from Riess Harper who sailed through his motos and won his semi-final, following a tense and close final finished in third. Ryan East also rode with this class but unfortunately missed out on a semi final.
The ever-popular expert 14 class saw Matt Kirk with almost perfect results go into the final easily and finish on the podium in second place. Will Elsey and Sam Aves both rode into the semi-final easily but both finished fifth so missing out on the final. Leon Dixon and Oliver Cutmore also rode this group but missed out on a semi-final.
The expert 15 class had Tom Elvin going through to the second final of his day and finishing eighth. Natalie Miller rode in the Female 13 – 15 final where she found herself in a dreaded run-off but made it work and went through to the final where she finished seventh.
The extremely competitive expert 16 class saw Steven Sewell racing fantastically well and going easily into the final where he finished a close second. Bradley Watts, also in this group went easily into the semi and final and was lying third when he slipped up in his final and finished fifth. Ashley Hall also rode in this class but unfortunately missed out on the final.
The junior men had Jason Clarke riding well but unfortunately he missed out on the semi final, In the older group of masters Stu Dixon went through to the quarter-finals easily but following a fall missed out on the A final.
The junior female class saw last years British Champion Nicola Reed gaining excellent moto results going easily into the final where she crossed the line in fifth.
There was a special Old Skool race at this year’s championship in aid of Stephen Murray, a professional British BMXer now from the USA, who was recently seriously injured. The money raised will go to support him in his recovery. There were three Braintree riders who took part in this charity race, Jools Allen, John Stockwell and Craig Schofield and rode excellent motos with all three going into the semi-finals but missing out on the final.
