Eastern Region Forum

As the sun prevails, along with the rain, most clubs are in full swing with their coaching and promotional activities. The Regional Go-Ride team are also busy delivering holiday programmes around the Region covering cycle speedway, bmx, mountain biking, grass & hard track linking with general Go-Ride sessions. Check out the Go-Ride Activity Programme section on British Cycling’s website or follow the link below;

Our Forums will resume in the autumn with plenty to discuss, review and plan following the Olympics, Sky’s investment in British Cycling and our 2009-10 Go-Ride delivery programme. In the meantime though, keep up the good work.

P.E. & School Sport Club Links (PESSCL)

During the summer term Alison & Mark have delivered the Go-Ride programme to 960 young people mainly through the PESSCL programme. There has been varying degrees of success with a couple of schools wanting to take up Go-Ride as part of their curricular sporting activities.

Most notable is Fakenham High School, Norfolk. All of the PE staff will be undertaking the Activity Coach Award for Teachers in September and the School Sports Partnership have funding in place & have ordered 15 bikes, 15 helmets, and a trailer to take the bikes around the Partnership. The school will also play host to an inter-school competition in the autumn.

There most likely to be a part-time BC qualified Level 2 or above Community Coach position advertised for the North Norfolk area soon. Watch this space!

Queues at Suffolk Show 2008

Everything at the Suffolk Show this year was BIGGER & BETTER. A much larger arena, two British Cycling Go-Ride gazebos, BC & Club banners lining it, 4x Go-Ride 20ft high flags, BC & Club promotional boards & most importantly the break & tea making area for staff & volunteers! All we need next year is a P.A. system.

A total of 503 Young People participated in the Go-Ride Skills Challenge with some returning from last year to have another go. Some of these young people have also gone on to join local clubs.

A structured day ensured the volunteers only worked in the morning or afternoon leaving them free to enjoy the Show. Thanks to the Volunteers.

NEW Go-Ride Club

CC Ashwell, Herts are the latest club to sign-up to become a Go-Ride Club. Their weekly Go-Ride coaching sessions led by Geoff Godschalk have already attracted over 25 riders. Some of these youth riders have already made a notable debut into the world of cycling with a win in the 1 mile Team Pursuit at the recently held Biggleswade Grass Track event.

Cyclo-Cross Taster Sessions

The first at Bury St.Edmunds had 7 riders all new to cyclo-cross and the second at Chelmsford had 17. The final one is on Sat 14th August at Foxhall Stadium Ipswich. This is an example of partnership working between BC, the EC-CA and its member clubs that are also Go-Ride Clubs - West Suffolk Wheelers & Ipswich BC. Riders were introduced to the skills needed for cyclo-cross, especially fast dismounting and mounting. They all participated in a fun race to try out their new skills. For more information contact Mark Wyer.

Eastern Youth Grass Track League?

Are you already promoting grass track events for youth riders? If so, would you consider running the event as part of an Eastern League next year? Food for thought and discussion at the next Forum if there is any interest or demand.
