Ever since I got back into BMX 2 1/2 years ago I have always wanted to get the track in South Woodham Ferrers reopened. After talking to a couple of people I knew who rode or raced there we decided to give it a go. It seems we were just in time. After an initial talk with the council today it seems that the land the track is on is earmarked for a total re-development at the start of the new year. They plan to build a big sports complex with football, rugby and hockey pitches and part of that plan is to flatten what is left of the BMX track.
However after telling the council about how big BMX racing is now and the fact that it is now to become an Olympic sport, they may be interested in saving the track and incorporating it into the sports complex. Myself, Paul Coleman and Scott Weeks are going to attend the Council meeting on the 19th November to put forward our plans on saving and rebuilding the track. We had to blag them a little and told them we had a petition signed by 300 people asking them to save track.
This is where I need the help of you lot. I will be bringing a petition to the Children In Need RADBMX Cruise on Sunday which I would be grateful if every one could sign. We have also set up a group on facebook which I would like everyone to join to show their support. Even if you are not on Facebook it only takes a couple of minutes to join, and the more members we have the more chance we have of saving the track.
It has been suggested by a few of the members of the Facebook group that we also incorporate a memorial to Rob Indri who was a local down the track, and I think that would be a great way to remember a BMX legend. So go on people join our group and help save another BMX track from the bulldozers
