Australian Grant White has been named as the new coach of the British BMX team, British Cycling announced.

White's main role will be to coach Shanaze Reade, Joey Gough, Kelvin Batey, Marcus Bloomfield and Liam Phillips in the lead up to the Beijing Olympics. He will start at the end of January, working with BMX programme manager, Keith Reynolds, the British team's sprint coaches, and the English Institute of Sport support staff.

White has 18 years experience coaching BMX and 4-Cross, working with the Australian and New Zealand national BMX teams. He was also a successful professional BMX rider in his own right, spending much of his career racing in America.

The GB Team's performance director, Dave Brailsford, said in a statement, "We have been looking for somebody with the skills and experience to pull together and co-ordinate all the available resources and expertise within British Cycling and the EIS to not only further our BMX performances at elite level, but also to push forward further development of our broader BMX programme. I have watched Grant White's work closely over a period of time and have been very impressed with his ability and his willingness to take on an innovative coaching approach which fits closely with the coaching ethos in the GB Team."
